Obtaining Citizenship

Naturalization is the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. Qualifications for naturalization include:

  • You have been a permanent resident for at least five (5) years OR you have been a permanent resident for three (3) or more years and are filing as a spouse of a U.S. citizen;

  • You have been present in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the previous five years prior to applying OR you have been present in the U.S. for at least 18 months out of the previous three years prior to applying if filing as a spouse of a U.S. citizen;

  • You have lived in the state or USCIS district for at least three (3) months before filing;

  • You have demonstrated good moral character for five (5) before filing;

  • You can read, write and speak English and understand U.S. history and government, and

  • Meet all other eligibility requirements.

Children can gain citizenship through a U.S. citizen parent.
